  Dakota Skies - Outtake 1

Excerpt

Chapter One: Welcome to Blackrock

Welcome to Blackrock

The young sheriff, Jamie Carter, looked at the bold words above the town entrance and sighed. Would he be welcome in Blackrock if the people knew what he suspected about himself?

“Knew what?” a little voice inside him hollered.

That their butch, gun-totin’ sheriff was pretty sure he preferred men to women. It was a revelation that, if public knowledge, would get him killed.

He’d pondered over many scenarios, but in the end, Jay suspected he’d been burying his true feelings deep down for a long time. Two major questions almost constantly floated around his head. In his line of work, what was the likelihood of being approached by a similar-minded man? And how would he react if he was approached?

He had no idea what the answers were. It was a situation that might never happen. Whatever the scenario, secrecy was of the utmost importance.

If absolutely necessary, he considered the possibility of locking bodies with a woman just to keep suspicions at bay. It wasn’t like he’d never been with a woman. His experiences with Claire sprang to mind. Only being with her taught him more than where to stick his dick. The success of his plan to hide his sexual leanings hinged on his ability to act on his imagination.

He looked up to the sign again—Welcome to Blackrock—and snorted at the irony. He wanted to add—providing you satisfy criteria A, B, and C.

Review

Cover: I love the cover, I think of Jay when I look at this.

Story:

This is not my normal read, as I don’t normally read anything historical.  However, this author has totally changed my view on historical novels, I was hooked from the first page.......

......What I found most interesting with this book, was when we met the Sioux Indians.  I knew nothing about them, but the author manages to describe everything about them so simply that you can picture it all in your mind. To me it was surprising that they accepted two men being together, and yet even in todays society it is still frowned upon.

The book is full of twists and turns, and things happen that you do not expect.  I found that once I started reading, that I could not put the book down. I had to read as often as possible so I could find out what happened….. did they sort out their differences, or where these so big that being together was just not possible.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves historical books, and even those who don’t please read this.  I am so pleased that I got the chance to read Dakota Skies, and I will definitely be looking for any future books by this author.

Macky’s Review from Sinfully Sexy Books

check out above link for more details and a video interview with the author

... I was interested to see which way this novel would spin it. Would it just be a regular cowboy romance, set on a ranch, but in a historical setting? Or would it actually encompass what the west was truly about in those days? Well, I can honestly say this book definitely answers the latter question and we most certainly get to see it in all it's gritty glory...warts and all.

Taylin has written this as a proper story, and I'm emphasising the word story here because this isn't just a basic sexy m/m romance. The kind that tends to just centre around two cowboys who meet, fall in love and have lots of sex furtively, wherever they can...usually in the barn!...     ...No...It's actually a pretty epic journey, that even though the love story is an integral part of the novel, still manages to shine as an evocative description of life in a time that spawned many a tale of action and adventure.

The story opens in a town called Blackrock, which has two Sheriffs, twins whose murdered father was Sheriff before them, but what's most unusual is that these siblings aren't identical, they're a brother and sister team...Jamie and Anna Carter. Anna is just as tough as her brother and the townsfolk have come to respect her just as much as they have her male twin, who prefers to be called Jay. He knows he has feelings for men, but of course in those days being gay could get you killed...

...So it's because of these burgeoning feelings, and being constantly chased by the local townswomen, who either want him for their daughters or themselves, that Jay decides to hang up his Sheriffs badge, leave the town for a while on his trusty horse Houston, and turn his hand to bounty hunting, leaving a very capable Anna in charge of the town until he decides to return........

During his travels he meets Kit, a young guy living off the land and after Kit saves him during a dangerous altercation with some native Americans, they team up for a while and ride the plains together. Their time together only reinforces Jamie's knowledge that he's gay as he finds himself drawn to this handsome, self reliant young man and it seems like his interest is reciprocated but Kit is hiding something that could put his and Jay's friendship and blossoming attraction at risk and it's this secret and the tragedy from Jay and Anna's past that drives the directions that the book takes over the course of the story, towards it's exciting, emotional ending.

But it's not just a love story, it's a tale of adventure and discovery, with a cast of characters who all have major parts to play in its ongoing storyline and it's dramatic outcome. There are people who in my eyes could be be just as easily classed as main characters, as much in a way as the two cowboys, especially as every now and again we go back to Blackrock to see what's happening to Anna and the drama unfolding in her life,..........

......Native American culture also plays a massive part in this, it's society, lifestyle, lore and spiritual influences, and that was like manna from heaven to me because it's a way of life that's always captivated me and a lot of the book takes place among the tribes who populated the area around where Blackrock is situated. To be honest I've only given a tip of the iceberg as far as information about the actual storyline and plot is concerned, it's a decent length book and it's packed with content. ......

There's absolutely no doubt that Ms Clavelli absolutely loves this time in history and it shows, as a lot of things this author writes about feel really authentic and obviously well researched.

So I guess I'll wrap this up by saying if you want to read a book where sex definitely has it's part but it's really the depth of story you want to get lost in then I think you'll love this, if it's oodles of man on man action with a flimsy backstory you're looking for then you'll be disappointed. It's m/m so of course the love story and sex is there, and it's yum, but for me it was the connection and weaving of the story involving all the trials and tribulations that the gang went through and shared together that made this the enjoyable read it was. Taylin, you tell a great tale! I'll remember Jay and Kit's story for a long time

Review from multitaskingmommas

My Rating: 4.5 of 5 Stars

There is something about a great story unfolding gradually and with surety that grips my attention. I love cowboy stories and am a great lover of old cowboy movies. Dakota Skies is a cowboy story that brought back much of those old movies to mind. It was written without hesitation, the imagery of the action when these did happen was vivid, and the sense of quiet of the environment and the thoughts of the men was very strong.

This is a story, short and simple. It is the story of how two young people's lives could change in an instant. The decisions resulting from those changes set the course of their young lives be it for the good or for the bad.........

......This was such a beautifully, delicious piece of story told and it did not skimp on romance, action, gore and intrigue. This is a story where the conflicting opinions on sexuality are clearly laid out:  Native American culture versus Western culture. As this is set in the Old West, it is clearly a conflicting set of opinions, especially when the spirit world comes into play.

The minor cast of characters, both real and spiritual, have huge roles here. Without their stories told, Dakota Skies would not have come out complete at all. From the stories of Anna, Morgan, Mason, Tala and even Houston and Nutty, they were such great characters that completed this tale of Old West cowboy adventure story.

As for the romance of Kit and Jay, theirs is a real romance here peppered with a bit of sizzling scenes between the two. However, it is their journey into the spirit world where they are best shown to their advantage, especially when they get guided through the course they finally decide on by the spirits who understood that their love was something that should only be cherished.

Definitely a must read and I loved it.
